John Nelson and his wife faced a difficult situation when attempting to move from California to North Carolina. Their moving company allegedly doubled the cost of their move, causing significant distress.
The couple had previously entered into an agreement with a moving broker for a quoted rate of just over $16,000. They had already paid $7,000 as a deposit. However, on the day of the move, the company reportedly increased the price to $32,000, citing additional belongings not accounted for in the initial estimate.
Despite the drastic price increase, Nelson decided to proceed to avoid forfeiting their deposit. Problems continued when the company allegedly demanded more fees at the time of delivery.
The couple reported an attempt to deliver their items on June 3, ahead of their planned date to receive them. This led to a failed delivery and the imposition of an additional redelivery fee.
Nelson described the situation as being held ransom for $30,000. They claimed the company staged a false delivery attempt using a different truck from the one initially used to load their items.
The couple took action by filing police reports in both Oceanside and their new hometown. They also filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The broker in question has gathered 280 complaints with the BBB in three years.
The moving broker disputed the couple’s claims but stated it was working towards a resolution.
