Controversy Surrounds Representative Max Miller Amid Abuse Allegations

Several Republican figures are under discussion as possible candidates to replace Representative Max Miller in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District. Miller faces pressure over abuse allegations, which he denies.

Miller, a two-term congressman and former aide in President Donald Trump’s administration, is involved in a contentious legal dispute with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. He denies the allegations that he abused her or their daughter, and he has not been charged with any crime related to the accusations.

Senator Bernie Moreno and Miller exchanged criticisms on social media, with Moreno asserting that Miller “should not serve in the House of Representatives,” while Miller accused Moreno of political motives. Miller stated to Newsweek, “I have never spoken publicly about Senator Moreno until he made defamatory and false statements about me. I have had several private conversations with him about his daughter’s mental health, and he knows that what she is alleging is not true. I am not concerned with him and his need to churn the rumor mill right now. I am speaking up to set the record straight about my family.”

Concerned Republican lawmakers have publicly supported Moreno or voiced unease following the social media exchange. Miller has until Wednesday to withdraw from the ballot, enabling Republicans to hold a quick replacement primary for his Cleveland-area House seat.

Miller responded to reports of multiple GOP senators urging him to step down, stating, “Every accusation that has been thrown my way has been found unsubstantiated by the court system as well as mine and my ex-wife’s court-appointed mediator (who is a psychologist and mandatory reporter).”

Potential Republican Candidates

Several names have emerged as potential replacements if Miller steps down. Republican sources indicate the party is considering:

• State Representative Mike Dovilla of Berea, a U.S. Navy veteran and former presidential appointee to the Office of Personnel Management.
• Former U.S. Representative Jim Renacci of Wadsworth, who previously represented parts of Northeast Ohio in Congress.
• State Representative Melanie Miller of Ashland.
• Former State Senator Kevin Coughlin of Bath Township.

Renacci expressed interest in running for the seat if Miller decides to withdraw, noting his remaining political connections and recognition in the area. “I still know a lot of people, I still have good name recognition,” Renacci told Axios. “I’m getting calls from everybody,” he added, describing requests from many urging him to consider the opportunity. Despite this, Renacci stated, “I truly don’t believe Max is leaving, I think Max is going to stay in the race.”

President Trump commented on the matter, saying, “I know Max, he’s a good person…and I’m going to let the families figure that out.” Trump added, “It’s a very sad thing, especially when you know somebody so well, to be going through that. But it’s accusations, and I’m going to let them figure that out.” The Wall Street Journal reported Trump warned Miller in a phone call that his reelection bid would be challenging, frequently describing the contest as “tough” and “a really hard one.” Sources claim that Miller asked Trump for a public statement of support, though Miller stated Trump was “supportive of me over the phone.”

Miller Rejects Accusations

On Sunday, Miller appeared in a social media livestream adamantly denying the abuse allegations and vowed to continue his reelection campaign, despite growing scrutiny.

“I’ve been portrayed as an abusive husband, an abusive father, and a violent man. Those allegations have damaged my reputation, caused enormous pain to my family, and most importantly, it’s affected our daughter,” Miller stated. He emphasized that “no court” and “no agency” have substantiated any abuse claims against him, and no criminal charges have been filed.

He shared documents related to the abuse allegations and litigation, inviting the public to review them. Emily Moreno’s attorney, Stefan Mychajliw, responded in a statement: “It is shameful that Max Miller decided to go on a bizarre and lie-filled rant about his ex-wife to desperately try to save his political career. There is a documented trove of evidence that Miller has a history of violent and dangerous behavior, and no amount of victim shaming will change that. It is despicable and abhorrent that Miller lied on an unhinged and humiliating video for their daughter to watch one day.”
