Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner has stirred debate with his policy proposals and personal controversies. During a pre-primary address, Platner advocated for universal health care, wealth taxes, a Green New Deal, and other progressive policies. He controversially suggested that billionaires should face jail time for improperly engaging with political ads, a statement that drew criticism from Republicans.
Platner’s remarks on campaign finance reform, including his desire to overturn Citizens United and limit election duration, were met with applause but also backlash. Critics highlighted Platner’s own support from billionaires and called his approach “Marxist dystopian.” Republican strategist Colin Reed noted the irony, given Platner’s endorsements from figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. These endorsers have received contributions from billionaires like George Soros.
Platner’s campaign has faced scrutiny over past relationship allegations and controversial online behavior. One ex-girlfriend accused him of domestic violence, which he denied. Furthermore, Platner faced backlash for sending explicit messages via Kik, an app criticized for safety issues. His wife, Amy Gertner, reportedly disclosed the messages during the campaign vetting process.
Platner’s past allegations include a claim that he sported a Nazi-linked tattoo, which he later covered. He insisted he was unaware of its meaning when acquired. Platner also apologized for old inflammatory Reddit posts about various topics, which he attributed to a difficult period after military service.
The Platner campaign attributes these personal allegations to political motivations, while critics accuse them of exploiting private matters. These issues have complicated Platner’s campaign against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. Controversies have persisted despite acknowledging past actions and claiming changes in his views.
