Controversy Surrounds Deportation of Young Boy in Texas

Homeland Security Secretary responded to criticism from Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico about the deportation of a young boy. The boy, along with his father, was detained by federal immigration authorities.

Victor Martinez Nieto and his 5-year-old son, Liam Tadeo, were deported on Tuesday. The incident occurred in Austin, Texas, earlier this month while they were heading to a soccer match.

Talarico’s Criticism

On Wednesday, Talarico criticized the immigration enforcement policies. He stated that Liam Tadeo, who was expected to begin kindergarten, should have been in school rather than detained.

“ICE kidnapped Liam Tadeo on his way to a soccer game,” Talarico wrote on X. “Liam should be in kindergarten. Instead, our government has placed him miles from home.”

On Thursday, Talarico announced that Liam had been deported.

Clarification from Mullin

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin addressed the situation, asserting that Talarico’s portrayal was incomplete. He clarified that the deportation occurred at the father’s request.

“ICE does NOT separate families,” Mullin stated. “Parents decide if they want to be removed with their children or if another guardian is designated. Father and son were deported together.”

Mullin emphasized parental responsibility in legal matters.

The pair were held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center. James Talarico is running for the U.S. Senate and had previously highlighted this case in his campaign.

Victor Martinez Nieto was initially arrested in November 2025 and deported in February. He later returned to the U.S. illegally, according to reports.
