Social Media Backlash
A left-leaning coffee shop chain in New York City sparked controversy with a provocative Instagram post directed at Congressman Dan Goldman. The post criticized Goldman’s visit to one of the shop’s branches and underscored ongoing tensions regarding support for Israel.
Congressman’s Visit
Goldman, who is facing strong primary competition from Brad Lander, visited Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with his daughter on the last day of early voting in a Democratic primary. Although outside his district, the visit was notable due to the location being part of a significantly progressive and predominantly Jewish congressional area.
Instagram Post Reaction
Hours after Goldman’s visit, the coffee shop’s owner wrote a post that criticized Goldman’s stance on Israel in a harsh tone. The post included a surveillance camera image of Goldman at the cash register and questioned his political views. The owner expressed regret for not recognizing Goldman sooner, stating he would have been refused service.
“We don’t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers or anyone in between.”
Goldman’s Response
Goldman replied to the post in its comments, clarifying his reason for visiting the shop. He mentioned stopping at Poetica so his daughter could use the restroom and purchasing a coffee as a courteous gesture towards the store employees.
The incident highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding political support for Israel, especially in districts with progressive constituents.
