Graham Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, has recently addressed reports about her husband’s past involvement in exchanging explicit text messages with multiple women. This issue marks a new controversy in Platner’s campaign for the Democratic nomination in Maine, where he aims to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming November election. Democrats view this race as pivotal in their efforts to regain control of the Senate.
On Saturday night, Platner shared a video of Gertner on X. In the video, Gertner refrains from directly discussing the alleged texts, instead criticizing the wider coverage as mere gossip. She emphasizes the challenges of marriage, stating, I find it really shameful that there’s a group of media outlets and people who are willing to spread gossip. No marriage is perfect, and I don’t want a perfect marriage; I want my marriage.
The Wall Street Journal initially reported that Gertner had informed Platner’s campaign in August about explicit texts she discovered on his phone earlier in their relationship. Her intent was to assess any potential political risk these texts might pose to Platner, a first-time candidate. Campaign aides eventually concluded the matter was private and best handled by the couple, who wed in 2023.
In the video, Gertner mentions the support they receive, Our marriage counselor helps, my personal counselor helps, Graham’s personal counselor. Graham and I have a great marriage.
This statement aims to highlight their strong relationship despite challenges.
Platner, an oyster farmer and military veteran, has faced other controversies during his campaign. Notably, he has a tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism, which he claims he was unaware of initially. Additionally, he faced criticism for past deleted Reddit posts that dismissed military sexual assaults and included homophobic language.
Despite these issues, Platner emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, overcoming Maine’s Governor, Janet Mills, who withdrew her candidacy, leaving Platner as the leading Democratic contender. The campaign has yet to respond to requests for comment following these recent developments.
