Gotham FC Moves Home Games to Etihad Park in Queens

1 month ago 0

The move of Gotham FC to the Etihad Park stadium in Queens was announced recently, marking a significant change for the women’s soccer team. Carolyn Tisch Blodgett, the club governor, emphasized New York City’s prominence as a sports hub, which aligns with the team’s ambitious goals.

Since purchasing the team two and a half years ago, the new owners aimed to elevate Gotham FC to a leading position in sports. Tisch Blodgett, whose family also co-owns the New York Giants, shared these insights during an interview on “CBS Mornings.” The team’s past accomplishments include securing the National Women’s Soccer League Championship in 2023 and 2025.

“Our success on the field is clear,” Tisch Blodgett stated, reflecting on their recent championships. “Now, our focus is to extend that success beyond the field by enhancing the match-day experience to align with our goals.”

The team’s relocation involves a new stadium under development in the Willets Point neighborhood of Queens, expected to be ready for the 2028 season. Previously, Gotham FC shared the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, with the New York Red Bulls MLS team.

Despite not completely leaving New Jersey, Gotham FC plans to establish a training facility in Whippany. Tisch Blodgett highlighted the challenges women’s teams face as tenants in others’ spaces. “Our vision includes a permanent home for Gotham FC,” she said, emphasizing both the new training facility and stadium as integral components of their plan.

“We aim for top-notch facilities,” Tisch Blodgett added, referring to the New Jersey training center and the match-day environment at Etihad Park.

The excitement around this growth era was shared with players, whose experiences reflect the broader journey of women’s sports. Many have played in sparsely attended stadiums and borrowed facilities. The promise of personalized facilities, such as a dedicated locker room and a tailor-made training environment, is a significant milestone.

New York City FC, collaborating on this venture, described the move to Queens as a pivotal moment for Gotham FC, enhancing the team’s stature and offering fans an exceptional experience.
