Controversial Triumphal Arch Project to Begin Construction Near Arlington Memorial Cemetery

The federal government will initiate excavation within the next two weeks for a triumphal arch located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. This project, announced by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, is supported by President Trump and has sparked debate.

Construction is planned to last two to three years, operating around the clock. The site will feature a 250-foot tall arch clad in granite, adorned with three golden statues, and include an observation deck. The arch is planned for a location near Arlington Memorial Cemetery and the Lincoln Memorial.

This monument aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, honoring Arlington Cemetery and showcasing the capital’s significance. Secretary Burgum emphasized the architectural importance in a social media post.

President Trump is personally invested in the project, with plans extending to other iconic locations around Washington, D.C. He has promoted architectural renderings at White House events and favors the largest version of the proposed arch.

“This will be one of the great pieces of American architecture,” Doug Burgum stated.

However, the project faces opposition from Democrats, preservationists, and veterans. Concerns focus on its height and potential interference with sightlines between key monuments in D.C. and Arlington Cemetery. The arch’s proximity to Ronald Reagan Washington International Airport has also raised worries, though a lawsuit challenging the project remains unresolved in federal court.

The National Park Service conceded possible adverse landscape impacts but maintains the site’s historical relevance. Two panels led by Trump appointees have supported the project, with the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission granting approvals, subject to modifications.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration continues to assess the airspace impact and gather public feedback. Previous FAA studies indicate no adverse effect on the nearby airport, requiring only red obstruction lights atop the arch.
