Controversial NFL Call: Rams vs. Broncos

27 minutes ago 0

Sometimes, NFL officials make the right call. Other times, they don’t. Recently, the NFL acknowledged an error involving the Los Angeles Rams and a pass interference call against the Denver Broncos.

The NFL admitted that officials mistakenly called pass interference on Rams defensive back Josh Wallace during a Sunday Night Football game. This acknowledgment, reportedly communicated to Rams coach Sean McVay, suggests that the penalty was unwarranted.

The controversial call played a critical role, potentially costing the Rams the game. According to McVay, the interference call on Wallace was a mistake.

The NFL has not confirmed the discussion with McVay. Nevertheless, there’s no reason to doubt the coach’s claim.

The penalty against Wallace wiped out a key interception with a minute left in the game, when the Rams were leading 26-23. Instead of sealing the game, the call resulted in a first-and-goal for the Broncos at the Rams’ 7-yard line. Six plays later, the Broncos scored a touchdown, securing a 30-26 win.

“He told us that the call shouldn’t have been made,” McVay said about the conversation.

Despite Wallace’s contact with Broncos receiver Pat Bryant, the situation exemplified how officials can influence the game’s result.

Although the league admitted the mistake, the Rams still bear the loss, and the Broncos retain their victory.

Praise is due for the NFL’s transparency. Acknowledging errors helps maintain trust, even if the Rams receive no tangible consolation beside acknowledgment.

Meanwhile, on the broadcast, NBC’s officiating expert Terry McAulay disagreed with the call. He stated there was no interference, showing the discrepancy between officials’ decisions and professional evaluations.

Such transparency from past and present officials highlights the importance of maintaining integrity in the sport and admitting mistakes when they occur.
