Construction Site Incident in NYC Causes Building Collapse Alarm

A significant response by the New York City Fire Department occurred in Manhattan on Tuesday morning. This came after two columns gave way and five floors collapsed at a building under construction. Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the situation in a news conference, stating, “the building remains unstable.”

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) reported receiving a call at 7:57 a.m. about bricks falling from the 37-story high-rise located at 235 East 42nd Street. The collapse affected floors 21 through 26. Significant structural issues, including multiple cracks and sagging floors, were noted throughout the building.

This building previously served as the global headquarters for pharmaceutical company Pfizer. It is currently being converted into residential units, with an active and permitted construction project ongoing. The city’s Department of Buildings’ press secretary informed Nexstar’s WPIX of the construction status.

“Since arriving on scene, we have witnessed additional movement in one of the compromised columns,” Mamdani noted. “First responders and structural engineers are working closely with the project engineer to develop plans to shore up the affected floor.” He emphasized that “this is an extremely serious situation.”

Second Avenue has been closed off, and East 42nd Street is blocked, as per FDNY reports. Furthermore, East 43rd Street was cordoned off while crews work to secure the area. The authorities have evacuated surrounding buildings, including those under construction. Remarkably, no injuries have been reported among workers or civilians.

A construction worker recounted how his family, fearing the building had collapsed, contacted him. Cliff Johnson, a representative of Steamfitters Local 638, was inside the building at the time of structural failure. “The general contractor chose to go non-union for this project. All we want is responsible construction in the City of New York,” Johnson remarked. He criticized the inadequate shoring of the structure, leading to crumbling beams and floors. The project involves a complete renovation of the 33-story building, with plans to add 16 more stories.

The incident had a significant impact on commutes. Evacuations and street closures caused major delays for those trying to reach their destinations. Notably, a nearby school with approximately 400 students had to be evacuated. “A number of tall buildings in the area are also being evacuated,” Mamdani stated at a separate news conference. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and all workers are accounted for.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed that M42 buses were redirected in both directions. M101, M102, and M103 buses heading northbound, along with M42 buses, experienced delays. City inspectors are currently on site conducting investigations, and have advised commuters to avoid the area.

In 2025, the building at 235 East 42nd Street received seven OATH violations related to construction safety. Building records indicate that these violations resulted from noncompliance with city regulations, totaling over $32,000 in penalties. A $10,000 violation occurred in 2025 due to a failure to notify the Department of Buildings of a construction incident. Records show that all seven violations have been resolved.
