William Jewell College Athlete Passes Away After On-Field Emergency

MichahJo Barnett, a running back at William Jewell College, passed away on Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency during the team’s game against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.

A college spokesperson informed Newsweek that there were no known pre-existing conditions that could have prohibited Barnett from participating in football. They stated, “The College has no details as to the nature or cause of the medical emergency.”

The college announced his passing in a message on X, extending condolences to Barnett’s family, teammates, friends, and coaches. A vigil was held on the campus Saturday night to honor Barnett’s memory.

The medical incident occurred on the sidelines during the first quarter, leading to the suspension and eventual cancellation of the game as medical staff provided assistance. The cause of Barnett’s medical emergency remains unclear.

Barnett, a junior studying business administration, was an integral part of the William Jewell football program. Originating from the Kansas City area, he attended Liberty North High School where he played a pivotal role in securing a state championship for his team. He continued his athletic and academic pursuits at William Jewell College.

A tribute from Greg Jones, a former college football coach and Missouri Football Coach Hall of Famer, appeared on X: “The world lost a GREAT person today! MicahJo was the ultimate human. He always put his teammates before himself and brought out the best in everyone around him. In times like this, we’re reminded of how precious and fragile life truly is. Make sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you.”

The day had started promisingly for Barnett and the Cardinals. Barnett managed to score a touchdown before the medical emergency. Witnesses described a deeply emotional scene as players, coaches, and fans processed the tragic event. Emergency personnel took Barnett to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Known for his on-field prowess, Barnett had become a key player for the Cardinals. During his freshman year, he played in eight games and became the leading rusher by the 2025 season, despite an injury-shortened year. His achievements included rushing for 366 yards and scoring four touchdowns, highlighted by a 150-yard, three-touchdown game against Kentucky Wesleyan. Barnett earned Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference recognition for his classroom success.

William Jewell is set to play their next game away at Kentucky Wesleyan College on September 12. This remains an ongoing story; further updates will follow.
