Conservative Reactions to DSA’s Policy Proposals

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have recently come under fire from conservatives following statements by Megan Romer, the national co-chair of the organization. In a conversation with Fox News’ Shannon Bream, Romer openly confirmed several controversial policy ideas as part of the DSA’s platform. These include abolishing the Senate, eliminating prisons, and removing national borders.

Romer’s responses to questions about dismantling key national institutions were clear. She expressed the organization’s long-term vision of eliminating national borders, abolishing the presidency, the Supreme Court, and ICE, as well as defunding the Pentagon and transitioning large corporations to public ownership. Some proposals, like eliminating borders and prisons, were described as part of a future outlook.

“These people are insane,” said Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in reaction to these ideas.

Further criticism came from GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson. He described the DSA’s platform as communistic and warned of its increasing presence. Johnson emphasized the urgency of opposing these ideas as they gain traction across the country.

Actress Patricia Heaton simply commented with, “Yikes.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., highlighted the growing influence of the DSA beyond traditional areas like New York and California. He pointed out the success of Bernie Sanders- and Mamdani-backed candidates across the nation, suggesting the proliferation of these ideas could expand to more communities.

Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, acknowledged the openness of today’s Marxists about their perspectives, indicating a significant shift in political discourse.

Tom Tiffany, a Republican candidate for governor in Wisconsin, compared Romer’s remarks to those of Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist running in his state. Tiffany alleged that Hong shares similar proposals, including the abolition of police and prisons.

Responding to these accusations, a spokesperson for Hong denied any call to abolish the U.S. Senate and distanced the candidate from the national DSA platform. They clarified that while aspirational goals were discussed in the past, these are not current positions Hong would pursue as governor.

Further political discourse includes accusations and rebuttals in Iowa, with Joe Mitchell accusing democrat Lindsay James of endorsing similar DSA policies. James’ campaign denied these, attributing Mitchell’s claims to a strategy against James’ record.

The Virginia GOP urged Democrats to denounce these DSA positions explicitly, framing the lack of repudiation as implicit support.

Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, R-Tennessee, described the DSA’s platform as antithetical to American values, calling for an active defense of national principles.

Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, labeled the DSA’s positions as anarchistic. Public figures like Bill Ackman echoed such sentiments, criticizing the influence of DSA-backed officials in New York City politics.

The Democratic Socialists of America did not respond to requests for comments on the controversy. The rise of socialist platforms continues to garner attention, especially with their success in recent elections.
