The Iranian delegation’s presence at the initial technical talks with the United States in Switzerland highlights Iran’s demand for immediate financial concessions. This meeting follows a memorandum of understanding by President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with subsequent talks initially called off. The ongoing situation adds uncertainty in the region.
Counterterrorism expert Dr. Omar Mohammed explained the magnitude of these negotiations. He emphasized that Tehran is fully aware of the stakes and is using this opportunity strategically.
A whole-regime team led by chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attended the talks. They brought key figures like the Central Bank governor and top legal and energy officials, indicating Iran’s focus on securing financial gains, energy leverage, and maritime control.
“Iran’s delegation is built around implementation, money, leverage, and protecting red lines,” Mohammed said.
Araghchi leads the diplomatic effort, while Bagheri Kani represents Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, showing a coordinated approach involving all critical sectors of Iran’s government.
The presence of Abdolnaser Hemmati, the Central Bank governor, signals an emphasis on monetary issues like frozen assets and sanctions relief, aiming to rapidly convert pledges into usable cash.
Meanwhile, U.S. delegates, including Vice President JD Vance, remain hopeful on progressing issues like the nuclear question and the Lebanon ceasefire crisis. However, stark contrasts exist between the two teams’ objectives.
Mohammed warned that if the U.S. gives Iran financial concessions while Tehran maintains strategic assets like Hormuz, it may not result in peace. Instead, it could fund Iran’s future strategies.
Talks were paused but not terminated, suggesting ongoing developments in the negotiation process.
