Colson Montgomery’s Home Run Highlights White Sox Victory Over Orioles

The Chicago White Sox celebrated a memorable moment when Colson Montgomery joined an exclusive group in the third inning of Tuesday’s match against the Baltimore Orioles. Montgomery became only the third White Sox player to launch a home run over Eutaw Street, beyond right field at Camden Yards. This feat had previously been achieved by Adam Dunn on September 8, 2013, and Jeff Liefer on June 21, 2001.

I didn’t even think it went over that gate, I thought it went through the gate. I knew I got it pretty good, though, Montgomery commented, reflecting on his impressive hit.

This occurred during a high-scoring seven-run inning for the Sox, who overpowered the Orioles 9-3 in front of 17,581 spectators. Jacob Gonzalez contributed with a two-run single, and Junior Perez hit a three-run home run in the same inning. As of June’s conclusion, the Sox held first place in the American League Central with a 45-39 record, two games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians, who fell 4-2 to the Texas Rangers that day. The Sox managed a 13-12 win-loss record for June, marking their first consecutive winning months since 2021.

Celebrating the moment, Sox manager Will Venable expressed satisfaction with his team’s consistency and energy:

I think we’ve just done a really good job of maintaining our consistency, our energy. The valleys, which you expect to happen at times, really minimizing those. Which is great.

The win secured the Sox their first road series victory after seven consecutive series losses away, a milestone not lost on Venable:

That’s big. Disappointing we haven’t had a road series win in that long but it’s a great time to get it and really proud of the guys for continuing to battle on the road, he added.

Erick Fedde earned the win by allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Tyler Schweitzer pitched the remaining four innings and secured a save, marking the first for a Sox pitcher with no earned runs over four innings since Keith Foulke on August 18, 1997, against Seattle.

Honestly, not a lot, but the sweeper was great, said Fedde about his performance. Leaned on that, I mean, probably threw that, like 50%. But battled through it and it helps when the guys give you a bunch of runs. Makes life a lot easier, he concluded.

Montgomery, making a return from the Injury List, added to his season tally with his 21st home run, energizing the lineup. He explained:

I’m up there trying to stick with my plan, stick with my approach. Just knowing that if I stick with my plan that I trust, that there are results that are going to come out of it, Montgomery noted.

His powerful hit marked him as the 137th player to send a home run onto Eutaw Street, and the 73rd by an opposing player of the Orioles. Manager Venable described the hit as majestic.

The inning continued with two walks and a single, bringing Gonzalez to the plate with the bases loaded. His single drove in two more runs, and Perez’s subsequent three-run home run extended the lead to 8-1.

Just really good at-bats throughout the order. There’s a lot of good stuff that has to happen to score seven runs. Up and down the order, really good stuff, Venable praised.

Further into the game, Gonzalez added another run with a double in the fourth inning, contributing to the team’s first series win against the Orioles since a three-game sweep in July 2021 at Camden Yards.

In other team news, the Sox executed a minor-league trade, sending pitcher Ben Peoples to the Texas Rangers and acquiring catcher Ben Hartl in return. Peoples maintained a 2.39 ERA over 29 relief outings with Triple-A Charlotte, striking out 45 with 21 walks in 37 2/3 innings. Hartl, at 23, hit .218 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 32 games at High-A Hub City. He played alongside Sox outfielder Sam Antonacci at Heartland Community College in 2023.
