Abelardo de la Espriella emerged as the leading candidate in the initial round of Colombia’s presidential election on Sunday. De la Espriella, associated with pro-Donald Trump sentiments, secured nearly 44 percent of the vote. He now faces Iván Cepeda, a left-leaning senator, who garnered just under 41 percent. As no candidate achieved the 50 percent threshold, a runoff election is scheduled for June 21.
Current Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, a leftist, supports Cepeda. Petro frequently engaged with Trump on social media, particularly criticizing the U.S.’s controversial strike campaign targeting alleged drug boats, which resulted in over 200 deaths.
Although De la Espriella has never held political office in Colombia, he aligns with other regional right-wing figures, including Argentina’s Javier Milei and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. He represents himself as a Trump supporter, promoting stronger cooperation with the U.S. and pledging to tackle organized crime.
The Trump administration views the Western Hemisphere, including Latin America, as within its sphere of influence. It has demonstrated military strength beyond the U.S. border. In January, U.S. forces captured Venezuela’s former leader, Nicolás Maduro, in Caracas, extraditing him to face narco-trafficking charges. For nearly nine months, the U.S. has executed lethal strikes against suspected drug vessels in the southern Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
The U.S. has increased its military presence around Cuba, enforcing an oil blockade to challenge its communist government, while also conducting joint anti-drug operations in Ecuador. The Trump administration launched an initiative called the “Shield of the Americas.” This coalition comprises over a dozen center-right or hard-right leaders embracing Trump-like politics. The goal is to collaborate on combating illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and “foreign interference in our hemisphere.”
