The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office was alerted about the fallen climber, leading responders to reach the scene by 4 p.m. Despite their efforts, it was determined that the climber had sustained fatal injuries.

Nearby hikers, including Rebecca Rees, witnessed the tragic fall. Rees shared the distressing experience on Facebook, stating that it had been a profoundly sad day for all who witnessed the event. She mentioned that another witness, Robert, bravely approached the fallen climber, risking his own safety, to check for signs of survival.

Rescue and Recovery Efforts

The swift response of the rescue team was noted despite the challenging and remote location. Helicopter and ground teams reached nearly 13,000 feet within two hours, marking a commendable effort, especially on a holiday weekend.

Mountain Rescue Aspen reported the use of off-highway vehicles and helicopters to access the remote site. A helicopter first located the climber, then returned to Aspen for additional rescue personnel, who were transported to the high-elevation area near the peak.

The recovery operation was extensive, involving 21 rescue members. The deceased climber was safely recovered and evacuated from the mountain shortly after 8 p.m. The rescue team demonstrated compassion and care throughout the effort.
