Sophomore Clara Lyons faced a new challenge when Geneva’s first-year softball coach, Kaleigh O’Brien, asked her to switch positions. Previously inexperienced in the role, Lyons agreed to try playing shortstop. “I was grateful for the opportunity to try,” Lyons shared, acknowledging the difficulties of the position. She found the transition from her primary role as catcher to shortstop challenging yet rewarding.
O’Brien, who has a background as an All-American first baseman for Wisconsin-Whitewater, understands the learning curve Lyons faces. Lyons’ ability to overcome mistakes and refocus is vital to her development on the field. “The ball finds you wherever you’re at when you’re new there,” O’Brien commented, praising Lyons’ attitude and willingness to learn.
Lyons’ adaptability was evident. She previously played as a quarterback for Geneva’s girls flag football team. Lyons’ strong arm helped the team achieve a 9-7 record, showcasing her versatility. As Geneva geared up for the new season, the shortstop position became available, and Lyons’ readiness to step into unfamiliar territory impressed her coaches. O’Brien noted Lyons’ eagerness to take risks and try new positions.
Last season, Lyons’ performance as a freshman on the varsity team was significant. She batted .453 with team highs of 15 home runs and 44 RBIs. Despite Geneva’s challenging past seasons, the team looks improved this year with a 9-19 record, heading into the Class 3A Belvidere Regional games.
Lyons continues to lead the team offensively, maintaining a batting average of .446, with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs. Her experience with the Dennison Silver Hawks travel organization since age eight has honed her skills. “I primarily caught last year but hurt my knee halfway through,” Lyons reflected, having also played first base and outfield positions.
While her strikeouts have increased, Lyons acknowledges the quality pitching in the DuKane Conference. “Sometimes, teams are pitching me a little differently, but we have some great pitchers here,” Lyons commented. The adjustments opponents have made reflect Lyons’ reputation as a formidable player.
O’Brien’s foresight regarding Lyons’ potential has been confirmed. “We knew she was something special,” O’Brien emphasized, having seen Lyons excel in summer camps. Her presence at the plate continues to challenge opposing teams, who strive to avoid giving her good pitches. Whether hitting or accepting walks, Lyons’ impact on the game remains substantial.
