The NFL offseason progresses as teams complete their organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamps. Following a brief hiatus, training camp will resume near the end of July.
The preseason begins with the Hall of Fame Game featuring the Carolina Panthers against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, August 6, broadcasted on NBC. The first week of the preseason continues from August 13-15, with Week 2 scheduled for August 20-23, followed by Week 3 from August 27-29.
Before games commence, teams head to training camp. The Los Angeles Chargers have yet to announce their camp reporting date, but a key positional contest to watch involves the left guard position.
Position Battle: Left Guard Candidates
The Chargers face the task of replacing Zion Johnson, who significantly contributed with 1,130 offensive snaps last season. Johnson’s departure leaves a notable void in the offensive line.
Three players are vying for the left guard spot: Trevor Penning, Kayode Awosika, and Jake Slaughter.
- Trevor Penning: Penning is considered the early front-runner. At 27 years old, he brings experience with 33 NFL starts. His versatility on the offensive line is proven with extensive snaps at right and left tackle, as well as guard.
- Kayode Awosika: Awosika offers more guard-specific experience. Across five NFL seasons, he accumulated significant playing time at both left and right guard with the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles.
- Jake Slaughter: Slaughter presents an intriguing option. Drafted in the second round of 2026, the Chargers see potential in him despite his college experience primarily being at center. His progression could position him for playing time as a rookie.
