Cincinnati Reds Celebrate Victory Amid Umpire Controversy

The Cincinnati Reds’ clubhouse was filled with celebration following their 10-8 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. In contrast, the Cubs struggled to contain Cincinnati’s late-inning momentum, showing frustration during and after the game.

Focus shifted to home plate umpire Bill Miller’s performance, notably during the automated ball-strike (ABS) system challenges. Miller faced eight challenges, losing each one with his initial calls being overturned. The Cubs succeeded in five challenges, while the Reds won three.

Baseball’s Transformation with ABS Challenges

The game saw its first overturned call early when Miller ruled a pitch from Reds pitcher Rhett Lowder a ball. An ABS challenge confirmed the pitch was in the strike zone. Umpire Miller, seen previously officiating between the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals, didn’t fare better throughout the rest of the game.

Miller has a history of involvement in ABS disputes. In a recent Reds game, infielder Edwin Arroyo collided with Miller while attempting to field a ground ball, which contributed to the inning continuing.

Cincinnati reliever Caleb Ferguson was caught on camera expressing frustration towards Miller with expletive comments. Ferguson later apologized, acknowledging, “It’s just a very unprofessional thing on my part.”

Reds left fielder TJ Friedl hit a home run in the ninth inning against the Cubs, further sealing the victory.
