Survey Shows Strong Support for Proposition Reform

Democrat Xavier Becerra maintains a significant lead in the California governor’s race, as revealed in a recent poll that highlights substantial voter backing for reforming environmental law through a ballot proposition. The Public Policy Institute of California’s survey, published Wednesday night, emphasizes questions surrounding climate change and environmental strategies.

The poll indicates Californians largely oppose constructing data centers for AI technology, preferring state endeavors to protect the environment and reduce emissions, albeit with certain exceptions.

Becerra vs. Hilton: Election Dynamic

Becerra holds a commanding advantage over Republican candidate Steve Hilton in the contest to succeed term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom. Becerra has secured support from 61% of likely voters, compared to Hilton’s 36%. Hilton, a populist conservative and former advisor to a British prime minister, claims the race remains open, suggesting Becerra’s support might not be as strong as it appears.

Becerra’s spokesperson stated, “Californians got to know Xavier Becerra during the primary, and they’re ready to make him their next governor.” They plan to turn this support into votes by continuing outreach efforts.

Proposition 45: Reforming Environmental Law

A large majority of likely voters, including Democrats, Republicans, and independents, expressed their intent to approve Proposition 45. This measure aims to expedite environmental reviews and processes for housing, transportation, water infrastructure, and other projects.

Survey Director Mark Baldassare noted, “California voters are more aligned with Democratic positions on the environment, which is reflected in the polling. They also desire to balance environmental priorities with housing and infrastructure needs.”

Opposition to Data Centers

The poll reveals strong resistance to establishing data centers meant for the AI boom within local areas. A combined 73% of respondents oppose such projects, an opposition spanning all political affiliations, geographical regions, and demographics. Notably, in the Inland Empire, plans for a massive data center ceased due to resident backlash.

Baldassare remarked, “Residents are increasingly vocal about their disapproval of data center plans, with Californians echoing national concerns.”

Environmental Policy Support

The survey highlights robust, but conditional, endorsement of California’s methods to lower greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard the environment. While three-quarters of adults praise emission-reducing strategies, fewer are willing to absorb higher costs for renewable energy.

Governor Newsom’s initiative to prohibit the sale of new gas-powered vehicles by 2035 faces declining approval. Two-thirds now oppose this policy, a notable drop from the 49% support it received in 2021.

Despite this, most likely voters approve of Newsom’s and the state Legislature’s environmental performance, contrasting starkly with President Trump’s considerably lower approval rating.

Baldassare commented, “This disparity in ratings explains why Californians advocate for state-led climate change actions.”

The survey conducted between June 29 and July 6 involved 1,578 California adults, where 1,003 were likely voters, with a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
