Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Dominates Box Office as Franchise Fatigue Lingers

1 week ago 0

Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey, has triumphed at the box office over the past week, despite a summer troubled by franchise fatigue. While other films have struggled to match the success of their predecessors, The Odyssey opened with impressive numbers. Universal Pictures’ adaptation of Homer’s epic achieved $123 million domestically and over $263 million globally during its first weekend. This marked Nolan’s strongest global opening, surpassing previous hits like The Dark Knight trilogy and Oppenheimer. Within a week, its global earnings exceeded $320 million.

In contrast, the summer box office saw several popular franchises falter. Disney’s live-action Moana, featuring Dwayne Johnson, opened with a disappointing $43 million domestically. This was a stark contrast to the animated original’s $56 million debut in 2016 and the nearly $140 million that Moana 2 made in 2024. Reports suggest Disney might face a $100 million loss on this film, which cost $250 million to produce and has earned only $186 million globally thus far.

Warner Bros. faced similar challenges with Supergirl, which opened at $37 million domestically and is unlikely to reach $150 million worldwide. This pales in comparison to last year’s Superman, which grossed over $600 million globally. Reports indicate a potential $100 million loss for the Supergirl film.

Other once-successful franchises haalso struggled. Minions & Monsters opened with just $37 million domestically, currently sitting at approximately $366 million globally. This makes it the lowest-performing Despicable Me film for Universal Pictures and Illumination, following the success of Despicable Me 4, which opened at $75 million domestically and approached $1 billion globally.

The Mandalorian & Grogu, a cinematic addition to the Star Wars series, marked a significant downturn. With only $340 million in global earnings since May, it became the lowest-grossing Star Wars film in history, overtaking Solo, which previously held the title at $392 million.

However, some films have bucked the trend. Toy Story 5 launched with an impressive $159 million domestically in July and is expected to breach the $1 billion mark globally. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie did similarly well, starting at $131 million domestically in April and grossing over $1 billion worldwide. Paramount’s Scream 7 collected over $63 million in February, crossing the $200 million mark globally.

Original films have also thrived. Amazon Studios’ Project Hail Mary, led by Ryan Gosling and based on Andy Weir’s book, amassed over $680 million at the box office, making it Amazon’s highest-grossing film. Lionsgate followed with a successful release of the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, which surpassed $1 billion worldwide, outperforming all previous Hunger Games and Twilight films.

The low-budget horror genre surprised many. Obsession, created by comedic content creator Curry Barker, exceeded expectations, grossing over $400 million globally. Weeks later, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms debuted with $81 million and achieved over $360 million globally, setting a record for A24.

The summer will conclude with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. Expectations are high due to its predecessor’s success, with Spider-Man: No Way Home reaching a $260 million domestic debut in 2021. It faces the challenge of both franchise and superhero fatigue, following financial letdowns from earlier Marvel releases. Studios hope the new Spider-Man installment will revitalize audience interest.
