Christina Applegate recently revealed she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) over five years after announcing her diagnosis. In her podcast MeSsy, with fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Applegate shared that a doctor informed her she does not have MS, leaving her uncertain about her health condition. Despite this change, she noted that her symptoms have intensified rather than improved.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society highlights the complexity of diagnosing MS, as no singular symptom or test can definitively confirm it. Doctors look for evidence of damage in the central nervous system and may use tools like MRI imaging and blood tests. Updated diagnostic criteria, known as the McDonald criteria, now include additional biomarkers to enhance diagnostic accuracy.
A peer-reviewed review from Neurology emphasizes the issue of MS misdiagnosis, stating that incorrect diagnoses can lead to unnecessary health risks. Dr. Philip De Jager from Columbia University stresses the importance of consulting specialized MS centers for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
“Applegate’s public discussion of her diagnostic journey highlights emotional challenges patients face amid uncertainty and complex medical questions,” said the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Applegate initially applied for treatment in 2021 but reported worsening symptoms like numbness and balance issues and has used aids like canes and wheelchairs. Her journey demonstrates the diverse nature of MS symptoms and the intricate diagnostic process.
According to Dr. De Jager, MS affects 1-4 per 1000 people in the US, and symptoms include fatigue, weakness, and problems with coordination. These symptoms sometimes mimic other conditions, leading to potential misdiagnosis. A 2019 study found that up to 19 percent of those diagnosed might have been misdiagnosed.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society underscores the absence of a single test for MS and encourages consulting healthcare providers regarding symptoms and treatment. Applegate mentioned the emotional impact of the diagnosis change, fearing disappointing others. Despite the new information, she continues to search for answers to her ongoing health challenges.
