Challenges with the Reflecting Pool Renovations at Lincoln Memorial

The National Park Service is tackling issues with the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial. Efforts to clean up algae and maintain the pool have revealed new problems. The recent attempt to paint the basin ‘American flag blue’ resulted in peeling, adding to the challenges.

The project aimed to prepare the pool for the U.S. 250th birthday celebration, as ordered by President Trump. The goal was to reseal and paint the concrete basin between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

The Interior Department reported on social media the algae was killed, claiming the water is ‘crystal clear’. They shared images showing the Washington Monument reflected in the water. Experts disagree, saying real improvements need addressing core issues.

On Friday, workers found clumps of algae in patches they cleaned earlier. The new paint was missing in some areas. One section was the size of a park bench, revealing the original concrete.

Alex Hobe, a 52-year-old delivery worker, encountered similar issues. He visited the site to view the renovations, finding paint chips floating in the water. The chips were semitransparent and rough, adding to the concerns about the coating’s durability.
