Filming in the rugged landscapes of Texas poses several challenges, as highlighted by Cole Hauser, star of “Dutton Ranch.” During his appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Hauser discussed common safety concerns experienced during production. He was accompanied by co-star Kelly Reilly in the interview.
Hauser revealed that the filming location was home to an astonishing number of rattlesnakes. “Eight months, 3,400 rattlesnakes,” Hauser shared, referencing the snakes in Fort Worth, Texas. This rattlesnake issue once forced production to halt. Reilly asked Hauser about a particular filming site associated with rattlesnake dens.
“That particular location we were at, we actually were going to go from there at night and got turned away. Christina [director/cinematographer] found like, I don’t know, 40 or 50 rattlesnakes,” Hauser added.
Hauser plays Rip Wheeler, alongside Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton, in episode eight, season one, of “Dutton Ranch.”
Harsh conditions are not uncommon in Taylor Sheridan’s productions. On the LA Times podcast, “In Conversation: The Madison,” Michelle Pfeiffer, starring as Stacy Clyburn in Sheridan’s Paramount+ series, shared her experiences filming in Montana and Texas.
Filming scenes in open terrain brought unique challenges, according to Pfeiffer. “You may as well be in a tent because, you know, there is no bathroom,” she noted. She described the lack of amenities, from air conditioning and plumbing to scenic outhouses, emphasizing the site’s natural beauty.
“It took a while [to get used to] because they built that cabin. It was all a little bit rushed for everyone and so there weren’t certain accommodations set up,” Pfeiffer stated. “We didn’t really have trailers there because they were shooting 360 [degrees]. So, they couldn’t have a bunch of trailers around.”
Challenges continued, especially during winter. Pfeiffer elaborated, mentioning harsh conditions without adequate places to rest or access to basic needs like food or heating. “There was really no place for us to sit,” Pfeiffer added. “There was no bathroom nearby. There was no food. And in the winter, it was cold. It was like, ‘Could we have a heater?’ And in the summer, it was like, ‘Could I get an umbrella because the sun’s really intense?’ It took us about halfway through to figure all of that out.”
