The situation becomes more pressing as artificial intelligence makes its way into classrooms and administrative tasks. Pew Research Center also reports that 25 percent of teachers view AI tools as more harmful than helpful, while just 6 percent see them as beneficial. These findings indicate increasing adoption despite uncertainty about the true educational benefits of technology.
Cybersecurity is another pressing concern. The U.S. Department of Education reports that school districts face an average of five cyber incidents weekly. Schools depend heavily on technology for educational delivery and daily operations, making security, privacy, and resilience critical considerations alongside convenience.
School leaders confront a larger question. After years of digital transformation, the focus is shifting from adding more technology to assessing whether existing systems adequately support school operations. The challenge lies in ensuring that the technology schools use reflects the realities of teaching, collaboration, and operations.
Nathan Stark, who worked in schools for 16 years before founding FolioBridge, an education technology company, highlights a recurring issue: teachers having to move between multiple platforms to complete everyday tasks. FolioBridge aims to offer a centralized environment for internal communication and collaboration at schools.
Stark was inspired when a teacher wanted to connect with a peer teaching the same subject at a different school but found no practical way to do so. This experience prompted him to reconsider institutional support.
Stark believes teachers should have a more significant role in selecting and designing technology, as they experience its impact daily. Administrators may become detached from classroom workflows, so regular teacher feedback is essential to identify where unnecessary friction exists.
Time management is an example. Stark observes that routine meetings, administrative requests, and professional development should be scrutinized to ensure they respect educators’ limited time. Technology that simplifies these workflows can redirect focus to preparation, collaboration, and students.
This principle should also guide AI adoption. Stark sees potential for AI to assist in adapting lessons to individual student needs if educators use it effectively. Schools should scrutinize automated systems that influence important judgments about student performance. Innovation thrives when educational purpose defines its role.
Viewing infrastructure as part of a teacher support system is crucial. Schools can foster opportunities for educators to share expertise, reduce administrative friction, and connect with colleagues beyond their immediate environment. However, many schools still operate in isolation, offering limited chances for cross-institutional collaboration while preserving distinct cultures.
For education leaders, the challenge is intentionality. Every new platform demands decisions about attention, security, training, and workflow. Schools should evaluate technology by its ability to enhance the environment needed for teacher and student success. The real question is whether each technological addition simplifies educators’ work, enhances useful connections, and keeps focus where it’s most needed.
As digital transformation continues, the next competitive edge might not lie in adopting more technology but in creating systems that enable educators to spend less time on software and more on student support.
“Teachers have always been the foundation of great schools,” Stark states. “Technology provides its greatest value when it removes obstacles, strengthens collaboration, and increases educators’ capacity to focus on students.”
