CBD Treats for Dogs: Calming Pets During Fireworks

1 month ago 0

Fireworks can be stressful for dogs. As a solution, many dog owners turn to CBD treats to calm their pets. SunKissed Greenz, LLC, a CBD shop in Mokena, helps prepare dogs for the July Fourth holiday with its free calming treat distribution to dog owners.

The CBD treats for dogs do not contain THC, which is the part of Cannabis plants responsible for causing a high. The store offers CBD products both with and without THC for humans. Misty Nelson, the store owner, began her business online during the pandemic and transitioned to a physical space in 2022. She has created a welcoming environment where customers often bring their dogs for treats and affection.

Kelly Garver, a resident of New Lenox, frequently visits the store with her dog, Sadie. She narrates how CBD treats have greatly reduced Sadie’s anxiety during the Fourth of July fireworks and have helped with inflammation as well. Garver also cares for a Spanish greyhound rescue named Valerio, and uses CBD oil in their daily meals.

Garver’s trust in SunKissed Greenz’s products is rooted in her familiarity with Misty Nelson, who is a dog owner herself. While Misty’s husband, Bryan, makes the dog treats, Misty assists in the process. For both Sadie and Valerio, Garver uses CBD oil regularly to promote calmness and reduce pain.

Misty Nelson’s inspiration for her store came from her personal experience. Her 15-year-old dog suffered from frequent seizures, which CBD helped reduce. Although her previous dog has passed away, she continues her care with two German shepherds, Bohdi and Utah.

Nelson stresses that her products for people might contain small amounts of THC, yet those for dogs do not due to their sensitivity. She suggests starting with a low dose of CBD for pets and making adjustments as needed. Overdosage might lead to fatigue, thirst, or digestive issues.

Misty Nelson also engages in community activities like hosting dog adoption events for NAWS and Cache Creek Animal Rescue and organizing dog yoga sessions. Customers aid her efforts during holiday seasons to collect goods for NAWS.

Visitors like Tara Triefen, who brought her Shorkie named Smalls, visit SunKissed Greenz to prepare for holidays known for fireworks. Triefen notes the calming effect of the treats on Smalls during these events.

Becca Keller, from NAWS, advises pet owners to keep their animals in small rooms with music during fireworks. Light sedatives can also reduce anxiety in pets.

Veterinarian April Finan from Finan Animal Hospital sometimes recommends CBD for stressful situations. Although she uses CBD for her pets, Finan underscores the importance of being cautious due to limited research in the veterinary field.

Ward Phillips from the Low-Cost Clinic at South Suburban Humane Society prefers prescription medication for pets during stressful events like fireworks, due to more established research.
