Carly Simon Opens Up About Parkinson’s Diagnosis and Health Challenges

Carly Simon, the singer-songwriter famed for hits like “You’re So Vain” and “Nobody Does It Better”, announced that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. At 83 years old, Simon has contended with worsening mobility, initially attributing her physical challenges to arthritis and recovery from multiple joint replacement surgeries.

Simon shared a statement on Monday detailing her experiences with the condition. She previously underwent joint replacements in one hip and both knees, yet her mobility issues persisted. “At times, I could not walk without considerable help,” Simon reported. Her family eventually recognized a more serious underlying cause, leading to a comprehensive evaluation at the Mayo Clinic and a Parkinson’s diagnosis.

In her statement, Simon expressed the time she needed to come to terms with her diagnosis. “It has taken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly,” Simon stated. She emphasized the variability of Parkinson’s, noting its unpredictability.

Simon described the burden of symptoms from the progressive neurological disorder, with overwhelming fatigue as a significant issue. “Some days I’m so tired I can’t get the day moving at all,” she noted. “On others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself.” She has started treatment, including medication to relieve stiffness and other symptoms. Despite these efforts, she remarked on the disorder’s unpredictable nature, stating, “There is no tidy or predictable schedule to the illness. It does not consult my calendar before deciding what kind of day I am going to have.”

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, about 1 million Americans live with Parkinson’s disease. The neurological disorder, marked by the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells, affects movement. Symptoms may include tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness, balance issues, and speech difficulties. Although there is no cure, medications and therapy can manage symptoms.

Furthermore, Simon disclosed her recent experience with basal cell carcinoma, a common skin cancer, on her face. The cancer was successfully removed surgically, yet the procedure altered her appearance and influenced her choice to reduce public engagements.

Despite her health challenges, music remains a source of solace and motivation for Simon. She will release a new album, Comes in Waves, on August 14, her first collection of original songs since 2008. “It reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life,” she reflected.
