Car Ramming Attack Targets Berlin LGBTQ+ Pride Parade

Authorities believe the car ramming attack at the Berlin LGBTQ+ Pride parade on Saturday stemmed from Islamist extremist ideology. This incident left one person dead and at least 29 injured. The search for the suspect continues as German police focus their efforts on 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, identified as part of Berlin’s ‘Islamist scene.’

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed the attack appears to be an act of Islamic terrorism. Ballout, born in Germany to a naturalized mother, has previous convictions but details remain unspecified. He received a suspended sentence of 1 year and 10 months for past offenses.

On Sunday, police searched an apartment in Berlin’s Schöneberg district, finding it empty. The suspect’s wrecked vehicle was left at the attack site. Authorities caution the public to avoid ‘direct contact’ with Ballout, warning he may be armed and dangerous.

Investigators suspect he might not have acted alone. Witnesses reported others possibly left the vehicle after it stopped. Some victims had stab wounds, leading to the suspicion that multiple attackers were involved. Authorities believe the suspect attacked people with a machete.

The Berlin fire service reported three individuals with life-threatening injuries, eight seriously injured, and five with minor injuries. The identity of the deceased victim remains undisclosed.

Before the attack, attendees spent hours celebrating peacefully at the event near Brandenburg Gate, featuring numerous floats and live music. However, the attack disrupted the festivities. Julian Miethig, a participant, said it was ‘a dark day for the community.’

Emergency personnel and police were on the scene following the parade’s disruption.

Increase in Ramming Attacks

This incident is part of a troubling rise in similar attacks in Germany. Previous incidents include a deadly car attack at a Magdeburg Christmas market in December 2024 and a fatal car crash into demonstrators in Munich two months later.

Different alleged motives drive these attacks, but all raise urgent questions about public safety. The ongoing violence spotlights German political debates on immigration and security, boosting support for the far-right Alternative for Germany party and challenging Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Chancellor Merz labeled Saturday’s attack as ‘an attack on freedom,’ pledging justice for those responsible. Merz emphasized Germany’s commitment to preserving and defending freedom.
