A Canadian woman was detained on suspicions of espionage during her internship at NATO’s operational headquarters, according to Belgian authorities. The arrest occurred after Belgian military intelligence received a tip from NATO security services.
On Friday, authorities apprehended a ‘Canadian citizen of Chinese origin’ following raids at her residence and NATO command center workplace. The prosecutor’s statement alleged the woman’s involvement in espionage activities for a third country and her connection to a criminal organization.
The Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), where she worked, is strategically situated in Mons, southern Belgium, near France. SHAPE plans and manages joint military strategies and operations for NATO, which also includes a Cyber Security Centre. NATO’s political headquarters, based in Brussels, addresses key issues such as defense expenditures and cyber threats.
SHAPE spokesperson Col. Martin L. O’Donnell assured that ‘SHAPE operational readiness, command and control arrangements, or ongoing tasks have not been impacted.’ The headquarters continues its duties uninterrupted.
Both Canada and Belgium are part of NATO, a 32-member military alliance that, in 2021, identified China as a ‘security challenge’ alongside Russia and the Middle East. NATO leaders claim China’s military actions aim to disrupt global stability and present systemic threats to alliance security. In response, the Chinese government refuted these statements, asserting its military expansion as defensive.
This arrest comes amid a contentious period for NATO. President Donald Trump has criticized the alliance and reduced U.S. security responsibilities in Europe. He urged allies for higher defense spending and involvement in Iran, while controversially proposing to acquire Greenland from Denmark, alarming European allies.
Following Trump’s insistence, all 32 NATO nations agreed to dedicate 5% of their GDP to defense, focusing on military equipment, infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
