Canada has advanced to the next round of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history following a 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 32. The match took place on Sunday, with Stephen Eustaquio playing a central role by scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time.
After the match, Eustaquio shared his emotions with Fox Sports, saying, “Everything I do is for my family, my parents, my girlfriend, my daughter, my brother, my friends back home. For all of them.” He emphasized the team’s determination, stating, “We worked a lot to get this victory. We wanted to give this win to all Canadians, and we kept believing and pushing.”
Eustaquio described the goal as “amazing” and recounted how he “put a little bit of power on it,” expressing his satisfaction as the ball found the net’s back. Despite his initial excitement, he noted that the team remained “calm” following their historic win. “I feel very happy, but at the same time, I’m very calm. We performed well, though South Africa created some problems for us. On set pieces and transitions, we were effective and never stopped believing,” he said.
He also advised his teammates to shoot with all their effort, asserting that he followed his own advice for the winning goal. Eustaquio highlighted the team’s historic achievement but stressed their focus on future challenges. “The team is very calm as we realize we’ll face a tough opponent in the Round of 16,” he affirmed. Canada anticipates facing either Morocco or the Netherlands, with Eustaquio hoping their next opponent feels they will face “the hardest team in this World Cup.”
The match between Morocco and the Netherlands will determine Canada’s next opponent, taking place on Monday at 9 p.m. ET. Currently, Morocco is slightly favored to advance.
