Fauci’s Criticisms of Trump

Dr. Anthony Fauci, as the leading scientist during the COVID-19 pandemic, documented his frustrations and criticisms of President Donald Trump in his personal diary. Fauci often described Trump as ‘out of control,’ an ’embarrassment,’ and ‘an idiot’ due to the President’s handling of the pandemic and priorities seen as politically motivated.

Fauci’s entries, spanning from December 2019 to August 2022, reveal his concern over Trump’s push to reopen the country for the election and his disregard for scientific advice. On May 22, 2020, Fauci noted, ‘Trump getting out of control in pushing to open up the country and get the economy back before election day.’

Conflicted Relationship

Fauci’s relationship with Trump became strained over time, despite initial cordial interactions. Trump gave Fauci opportunities to speak publicly during press briefings early in the pandemic. However, by July 2020, Fauci noted Trump’s contradictory behavior towards him, describing it as a ‘weird game.’

‘POTUS is playing a weird game of acting Okay with me in person and saying that our relationship is fine to the press and then retweeting stuff that attacks me.’

Fauci documented specific issues, such as Trump’s preference for dismissing increased COVID-19 cases as a result of enhanced testing, while ignoring rising hospitalizations and deaths. This inconsistency contributed to tension between them.

Trump’s Response

In response to the diary’s release, Trump claimed, ‘He wanted to close everything down, and I didn’t.’ He accused Fauci of changing his stance on masks and asserted he lost respect for Fauci during the pandemic.

Despite resigning at the end of 2022, Fauci continued to reflect on his contentious experiences with Trump. He noted the right-wing political attacks he faced, particularly from figures like House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, whom Fauci labeled an ‘amazing coward.’

Fauci’s Media Presence

Fauci’s diary also highlights his acknowledgment of the widespread media attention surrounding him. He consistently observed how his national and international recognition skyrocketed during the pandemic, making him one of the most discussed figures worldwide.

‘Press still hot and heavy about me,’ he wrote on April 7, 2020. ‘The situation with my national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable.’

This newfound fame contrasted with Fauci’s background as a lifelong bureaucrat. Yet, he remained critical of Trump’s conduct, especially during the presidential debates and in handling racial tensions in cities like Kenosha and Portland.
