Phnom Penh, Cambodia is witnessing the fallout from the shutdown of a thriving online scam industry. The government crackdown, prompted by foreign pressure, has left behind empty luxurious towers once part of these operations.
These scams involved convincing victims to invest money in fraudulent schemes, often leading to massive losses. The FBI has dubbed these scams as “pig-butchering,” a term symbolizing the systematic deceit and manipulation of victims.
Last year alone, Americans lost over $20 billion to such fraudulent enterprises. The figure continues to rise annually according to FBI data.
The collapse of these scams has released thousands of foreign workers onto the streets. Initially lured with promises of well-paid jobs, housing, and food, many were held captive and forced to work under oppressive conditions.
Wilson and Shuiab, two among many expatriates interviewed, recounted harrowing experiences of coercion and torture. Both unwillingly found themselves contributing to scams targeting Americans, under threat of harsh penalties for unmet quotas.
NGOs, including Amnesty International, emphasize that these workers are victims of human trafficking. They face an uncertain future in Cambodia, caught in bureaucratic limbo without resources or support.
Authorities have required these migrants to pay substantial fines for overstaying visas, compounding their hardships. Though embassies are negotiating fee waivers, progress remains slow.
Inside overcrowded detention facilities, conditions are dire. One text message detailed limited access to free drinking water, forcing detainees to pay high prices for basic necessities.
Cambodian authorities claim to have aided workers repatriation, but reports from inside detention centers paint a different picture. Many continue to suffer in substandard conditions without legal assistance or protection.
