Caitlin Clark was a surprise absence on Wednesday when the Indiana Fever faced the Portland Fire. This marked her first missed game of the season. Despite her absence, Indiana won 90-73. Concerns arose about her availability for the upcoming game against the Golden State Valkyries. These worries were short-lived as Clark returned to the lineup and scored a team-high 22 points, leading Indiana to their third consecutive win.
Clark reflected on the mental challenges of recovery. “I think, at the end of the day, it’s me and my confidence,” she shared on Friday. Recovering from several soft tissue injuries in 2025 has tested her both mentally and physically.
“Coming back from injury and having however many soft tissue injuries is a real mental challenge,” Clark noted.
Injuries interrupted Clark’s promising WNBA career in 2025. After playing 40 games and earning Rookie of the Year in 2024, she was limited to 13 appearances last season due to a groin strain and ankle bone bruise. Clark’s confidence wavers at times, especially early in the season.
“These are the best players in the world,” she stated. “If I don’t feel 100% confident in my body, it’s not worth it if I’m not at my best.”
During Friday’s win over Golden State, Clark played 32 minutes and contributed nine assists, narrowly missing a double-double. She noted the difference between regular WNBA play and offseason competitions.
“Yes, I played USA Basketball this offseason, but I didn’t play 32 minutes, super physical,” Clark explained. “That’s the difference for me right now, but I feel great.”
She focuses on how her body feels the day after games, understanding her physical condition better over time. “Your adrenaline is pumping, you don’t always understand right after the game,” she added. “Overall, I feel good. It’s just continuing to take care of my body.”
The Fever and Valkyries are set to meet again on Thursday in San Francisco.
Wings rookie Paige Bueckers commented on the pressure on Clark amid shooting struggles, describing it as “inhumane.”
Clark is learning to be kinder to herself as she navigates the mental process of recovery.
“There are moments I get in my head, and that’s understandable,” Clark said. “I need to have a little grace with myself.”
She is actively managing her back soreness, aiming to prevent it from being a long-term issue.
“I’m doing everything I can to put myself in the best position I can recovery-wise and to play the next game,” she assured.
Off the court, Clark revealed the cover of her upcoming children’s book, “EXTRAordinary! A Little EXTRA to Reach BIG Dreams.” The book, based on her unique life experiences, is set for a November release.
