Bringing Kids to the Knicks Championship Parade: What Parents Need to Know

7 days ago 0

The New York Knicks winning a championship is a momentous occasion for fans, especially those who have followed the team for decades without seeing a victory. Many parents are eager to share this experience with their children by attending the championship parade. However, taking children to the parade requires careful planning due to specific restrictions.

An Opportunity for Fans Old and New

The Knicks last won a championship over 50 years ago, meaning this parade is a first for Millennials, Gen Z, and many Gen X fans. The expectation of over a million attendees means the streets will be packed. New York City’s Police Department has implemented multiple restrictions to ensure safety, making it crucial for parents to plan ahead.

Parade Environment and Considerations

The parade is open to all ages and deemed family-friendly by the New York City mayor’s office. However, facilities like restrooms are not specifically provided, and crowded conditions could become challenging if the weather turns bad.

To prepare, determine a meeting point in case your group gets separated. Service may be unreliable due to the number of people using phones simultaneously. Agree on a local business or restaurant as the designated spot.

Timing for the Parade

The NYPD advises early arrival, with entrance to the viewing areas starting at 6 a.m. Despite this advice, those with young children should consider if waiting for hours before the parade starts at 10 a.m. is feasible.

The mayor suggests arriving two hours before the start time. Parents must judge their children’s capacity to handle long waits and balance getting a good view against potential restlessness.

Restrictions on Items

Several items are prohibited at the parade, including strollers and bags. Strollers are challenging to navigate in crowds, so consider a carrier instead. My choice, for instance, is the Tushbaby hip seat combined with a snug carrier. This offers flexibility, allowing my child to sit or be carried, and includes storage features that comply with restrictions.

Bags are also not allowed. Essential items like diapers and snacks can fit in the Tushbaby’s pockets, and it has additional compartments for items such as phones and keys.

Other Prohibited Items Include:

  • Glass or metal water bottles (plastic allowed)
  • Bats and batons
  • Bicycles and scooters
  • Chairs
  • Coolers
  • Drones
  • Backpacks
  • Pets
  • Strollers
  • Umbrellas
  • Weapons

Parade Route Details

The parade will commence near Battery Park and proceed north on Broadway through the Canyon of Heroes, concluding at City Hall. Here, the team will join the New York City Mayor for celebrations, including receiving the keys to the city.

Expect dense crowds along the short route, particularly near City Hall. For less crowded viewing, consider areas closer to Battery Park.

Alternative Viewing Options

If the idea of attending in person seems too daunting, watching from home is an option. Broadcast coverage starts at 9 a.m. on CBS and is also available on Disney+. For those attending with children, being adaptive and ready to change plans is essential. These memories are significant, but attending should align with what is manageable for you and your child.
