Boston Celtics Trade Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia 76ers

On Wednesday, Boston Celtics fans reacted strongly to the news that five-time All-Star and 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. In exchange, the Celtics acquired former All-Star Paul George, along with first-round draft picks in 2028 and 2031, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030. This trade did not sit well with many, as fans voiced their frustration, and former Boston player Kendrick Perkins labeled it as “one of the dumbest trades in NBA history.”

Perkins, speaking on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” expressed his disapproval, stating, “This is a sad day for the Boston Celtics, and as a former Celtic, I do not approve.” He explained, “If you’re going to trade a guy that’s a top 10 player, you at least have to get back a guy that’s a top 15, top 20 player. Paul George is not that. Paul George hasn’t been consistently good since I was skinny, and that’s been a long time.” He referred to the Celtics’ trade as “Nothing but sloppy seconds.”

According to Perkins, Celtics GM Brad Stevens “handed the 76ers a trip to the NBA Finals next year” by trading Jaylen Brown. Brown joins a star-studded lineup with All-Star players Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, as well as up-and-coming young talent VJ Edgecombe. This trade is particularly impactful given that the 76ers, an Eastern Conference rival, had eliminated the Celtics in a seven-game first-round playoff series only a few months prior.

The Celtics get a nine-time All-Star in George, who last made the All-Star team in 2024. George is a former All-NBA First Team member, honored in 2019, and a two-time All-Defensive Team selection. He brings veteran experience but, at age 36, his consistency is in question. Last season, while playing for the 76ers, George averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game, with a field-goal shooting percentage of 43.9%. Those statistics may not be as impressive as expected from a former All-Star.

To George’s credit, he did perform well in the playoffs for Philadelphia against the Celtics. His contributions included 16 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists in a Game 5 victory, and a 23-point performance in the 76ers’ Game 6 win.

As the next season approaches, the performance of both teams will likely determine the success of this trade. The debate will continue over which team gained more from this exchange.
