Bill Maher Reflects on Ben Affleck’s Absence from ‘Real Time’

Bill Maher discussed how actor Ben Affleck declined annual invitations to return to HBO’s “Real Time” after their intense exchange in 2014. On his podcast “Club Random,” Maher revealed he still hoped for a private conversation to resolve their disagreement.

“I love him, but we just are going to disagree on that one,” Maher said. He suggested that a private talk might find common ground after nearly 12 years.

Affleck’s representative did not comment on Maher’s invitation or the possibility of the actor returning to the show. Affleck’s last visit to “Real Time” was in October 2014.

In a 2017 interview, Affleck explained his reaction was due to his opposition to racial or religious stereotyping, as reported by The Guardian. “I love a good debate, and I get very energized by it,” Affleck stated. His emotional response stemmed from his belief that stereotyping based on race or religion is fundamentally flawed.

The original debate on “Real Time” included Sam Harris and Nicholas Kristof. Affleck opposed what he perceived as broad accusations against Muslims after Harris described criticism of Islamic doctrines as often mistaken for bigotry.

“How about more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punch women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, pray five times a day and don’t do any of the things you’re saying of all Muslims?” Affleck questioned. “It’s stereotyping.”

Maher defended his stance by noting the threat of violence related to blasphemy and dissent, equating it to mafia-like behavior. “It’s the only religion that acts like the mafia that will f—ing kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture or write the wrong book,” Maher stated.

In a follow-up response, Harris clarified that his criticism targeted religious beliefs, not Muslims as a whole. Harris and Affleck reconciled privately after the televised debate, as stated during a 2022 “Club Random” episode. Maher, however, noted he hadn’t had a similar resolution with Affleck.

Maher remarked on the sustained interest in the October 2014 episode, saying, “More people mention that episode to me than anything. It wasn’t the best episode we ever had, but it got emotional with a movie star. That’s America.”
