Bali Restaurant Fire Caused by Balloon Explosion

A beachside celebration in Bali, Indonesia, descended into disorder when a balloon exploded within a well-known restaurant, igniting a severe fire. The incident occurred at the Chez Gado-Gado restaurant in the Seminyak resort area. Videos of the event show flames engulfing the establishment. The fire led to hospitalizing an Australian teenager with burns, as reported by 7News.

Tara Borelli, a Sydney witness, recounted the events to News.com.au: “At a 70th birthday, two balloons decorated the table. As a waitress lit a candle on the birthday cake, the flame came too close to a balloon, causing it to pop and explode. We felt intense heat from the explosion.” Borelli added that she quickly took her daughter and cousin to safety, heading towards the beach as the restaurant’s straw roof caught fire. Within moments, the entire venue was ablaze.

The chaotic scene prompted by the fire was described by Paul Cole to 9News. “It ignited like a firework; people were screaming, crying, and running in all directions.” The Badung Fire and Rescue Service battled the flames for over two hours before extinguishing the fire. Fortunately, there were no casualties as per The Bali Sun. First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya of the Denpasar Police stated that witness testimony suggests the balloon’s proximity to the candle sparked the explosion.

Attempts to control the blaze at the restaurant began with staff using fire extinguishers. However, these efforts failed due to the rapid spread to the thatched roof, as noted by authorities. A witness told 9News about the recurring explosions, emphasizing the overwhelming situation: “It was just terrible.” Joe Xuereb, another onlooker, described the bedlam, noting that people were unsure of how to react once the fire began.

Following the event, the restaurant announced on its website a temporary closure. This fire incident is a reminder of the dangers balloons can pose in proximity to naked flames in enclosed environments.
