Back to School in the U.S.: Different Approaches Across the Nation

The new school year has begun across the United States, marking the return of approximately 54 million students to their classrooms. Each school has its own way of starting the school year, creating unique experiences filled with excitement and, at times, a few nerves.

Los Angeles, California

At Micheltorena Street Elementary, Principal Nichole Sakellarion has established a pre-first-day tradition to ease kindergarteners into school life. This approach, dating back 11 years, involves welcoming these young students a day earlier than the rest of the school to help with their transition.

Fifth-grade students, known as ‘toolbox coaches,’ play a crucial role in mentoring the kindergarteners. Gerald Gomez-Reina, a fifth-grader, uses techniques like deep breathing exercises to help the younger students manage emotions. His companion, a stuffed animal named Rocket the Raccoon, also offers comfort to those who are anxious.

On the official first day, kindergarteners entered hand-in-hand with their toolbox coaches. Principal Sakellarion noted a marked decrease in tears among the new students, signaling the success of their early integration efforts.

Edmond, Oklahoma

In Edmond, Oklahoma, a group of about 25 parents and students met in a park to embark on a ‘bike bus’ journey to Will Rogers Elementary. This mode of transport encourages students to cycle to school, bypassing the long lines of cars. Weekly bike rides started a few years ago, inspired by similar initiatives from Oregon.

Third-grader Owen Raupe appreciated the efficiency of biking compared to waiting in traffic, reinforcing the benefits of this environmentally friendly start to the school day.

Beaverton, Oregon

The newly constructed Beaverton High School opened its doors this year. Featuring advanced facilities like a state-of-the-art theater and adjustable lighting in classrooms, the school aims to provide a warm and welcoming environment for its nearly 1,400 students.

Special education teacher Leah Baird highlighted the technology that helps cater to students’ sensory needs, such as adjustable lighting. The school’s new design includes numerous visual and sensory cues, such as a colorful mosaic, assisting students in navigating the large campus.

Sophomore Andrew Perez shared his initial apprehension about the new facility, but soon found comfort in its inviting interior, thanks to thoughtful design choices and natural lighting.

Charles City County, Virginia

Charles City Elementary School rolled out a red carpet welcome for its students, including young children attending school for the first time. Preschool teacher Kelly Orrell described the typical first day as a mix of tears and apprehension.

In an effort to soothe both children and parents, the school hosted its annual ‘boo-hoo breakfast,’ providing parents a space to share their emotions as they watched their children grow. Parent Jovan Howard expressed relief and excitement for his son’s first preschool day, channeling his child’s enthusiasm.

Such varied approaches highlight the diverse strategies schools employ to smooth the transition back to school. Each method aims to ease the students’ and parents’ minds as they navigate the start of another educational journey.
