Axiom REACH Foundation Expands Cancer Support Efforts to Bangladesh

24 minutes ago 0

The Axiom REACH Foundation, a U.S.-based cancer foundation, is expanding its efforts in Bangladesh by introducing its Princeton, New Jersey fundraising event to Dhaka. Scheduled for January 8, 2027, the ‘7.5K to Fight Cancer’ run will take place around Lake Hatirjheel in Dhaka. This event mirrors the foundation’s established ‘5K to Fight Cancer’ in Princeton.

The aim is to reach 30 million people as part of an awareness campaign and to double the funds dedicated to the country. The event expects participation from more than 1,000 runners and virtual involvement from over 25 countries.

Axiom REACH operates independently but is supported by Axiom Health Strategies, a think tank specializing in oncology and rare diseases. The foundation’s cancer-related initiatives in Bangladesh include the Children’s Cancer Fund and Project 1767, targeting breast cancer with free screenings.

Since its expansion to Bangladesh in 2023, the Children’s Cancer Fund has supported 68 child cancer patients through partnerships with 10 hospitals in the region. Of these children, 21 are now in remission. Mohammad Ehsan, the foundation’s executive director, noted the program’s success, emphasizing plans for future expansions.

Research indicates an alarming rise in cancer rates in Bangladesh. A publication in the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention predicts these rates could double by 2050. Globally, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer forecasts a 67% increase in cancer cases by 2050.

Cancer’s increase is particularly concerning in poorer countries with less advanced detection and treatment systems. To boost awareness and support, well-known Bangladeshi singer Dilshad Nahar Kona has joined Axiom REACH’s campaign.

“These children deserve to play, dream, and grow,” Kona stated in comments to Newsweek. “I’ll be at the event in Dhaka on January 8 and encourage everyone to show support.”

An example of Axiom’s impact is Sumaya Akter Sinthia, who received support at 14 years old for a cancerous neck growth. Now in remission at age 17, she is back in school, creating jewelry for sale, and volunteers with Axiom to assist other cancer patients.

“I can think about my future again,” Sinthia shared in written comments to Newsweek.

The 2027 run expects to raise over $60,000, doubling last year’s funding for Bangladesh, which will significantly strengthen the foundation’s influence in the region. Ehsan aims to grow the annual budget to $300,000 by next year and exceed $500,000 by 2030.

Founded in 2019, Axiom REACH initially focused on the Cancer Patient Support program to help financially struggling cancer patients in New Jersey. It has since expanded its initiatives to include mobile breast cancer screenings and support for oncology students in underrepresented communities.

“Once you’re involved, you see the impact,” Ehsan emphasized. “This support can help a child have a normal life again.”
