Avoid Shark Attacks: Insights from Experts

Understanding Shark Attack Risks

Shark researcher Jesse Watters interviewed Chris Fischer, the founder of OCEARCH, to discuss the recent increase in shark attacks. There have been several incidents this summer including closures at New York beaches due to bull sharks and attacks on swimmers in Queens and Florida.

Why Shark Attacks Occur

Fischer highlights a rebound in shark populations, reaching levels similar to the 1960s. He advises swimmers to avoid areas with active bait fish, which attract sharks.

“The only thing scarier than getting attacked by a shark is getting attacked by multiple sharks.”

This was the terrifying reality for Matthew Piendak, a spearfisherman in Destin, Florida. During a dive, three sharks surrounded him. He captured the entire ordeal on camera.

Strategies for Staying Safe

Piendak managed to escape unharmed by keeping calm and using his speargun to push the sharks away. A nearby boat rescued him before any sharks bit him. This incident underscores the importance of remaining composed in dangerous situations.

Biologist Forrest Galante explains that sharks use “exploratory bites” to investigate. These bites can cause significant harm, although humans are not typically on a shark’s menu.

Expert Insights on Shark Behavior

Sharks, lacking hands, use their mouths to explore potential prey. Fischers emphasize avoiding areas with active bait fish, as they attract sharks.

In waters frequented by sharks, encounters rarely result in bites. Piendak’s experience demonstrates the value of remaining calm and using available tools to stay safe.

For those more comfortable on land, observing sharks from beachside offers a safer alternative.
