An individual connected to the killing of an American woman in Ireland has been apprehended in Jordan, according to Irish media.
Arrest Details
The suspect, termed as a “person of interest” by the Irish authorities, was detained by Jordan’s Public Security Directorate. This action followed recognition of his return to Jordan and the ongoing Garda murder inquiry, Irish Mirror reports.
“We are aware of the arrest of a male in Jordan by the Jordanian authorities,” Irish police informed Fox News Digital, without disclosing his identity or any association to the investigation.
Police clarified they have not solicited any arrest from Jordanian officials, as deduced by the Irish Independent, noting Ireland’s lack of an extradition treaty with Jordan.
Murder Investigation Background
American Jamey Carney, a New Yorker residing in Ireland since 2021, died from suffocation and head injuries in Killarney, County Kerry, a prominent tourist locale.
Authorities presume the fatal incident occurred around 11 p.m. on a Monday, prior to her daughter’s discovery of her body the following afternoon. By then, the suspect had taken a bus to Dublin Airport and departed for Istanbul.
The Irish Independent revealed the detained Jordanian had hopes to move to the United States and had engaged in a relationship with Carney. It is believed he was present with her on the night she was attacked.
Immigration and Investigation Dynamics
The man arrived in Ireland in 2024 amidst heightened illegal immigration and was employed in hospitality and construction. He was reportedly denied asylum but remained in the country under an appeal before the murder occurred.
Authorities refrained from identifying the suspect or revealing his image, sparking criticism. However, Interpol involvement may be underway due to Carney’s American citizenship, guided by U.S. legal entities.
“Through our Legal Attaché in London, we have strong, established relationships and stand ready to assist in any way that the Irish government may request,” the FBI stated.
Suspect’s Movements and Social Media Presence
Previously residing in the UK, he journeyed to Northern Ireland and settled in County Kerry. His social media traces include posts from the UK and Turkey, with Carney’s profiles documenting her relationship with him.
Despite media assertions identifying the suspect, public confirmation is absent regarding his exact status. Noteworthy connections include learning Arabic and portraying a “mixed couple” image with Carney.
