Marte, a three-time All-Star, vanished mysteriously during a Boston road trip. Days later, the team still grapples with the aftermath. “Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated,” said manager Torey Lovullo. “I felt betrayed. That’s a whole different type of pain and frustration. But I’m through that.”

Meeting with Management

Lovullo met with Marte on Thursday, alongside general manager Mike Hazen and Marte’s agent. Following this meeting, the second baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left knee inflammation.

Lovullo withheld specific details but noted Marte’s frustration regarding his knee injury. Scheduled to be the designated hitter on Monday, Marte did not appear in the lineup.

“There’s right ways to handle things and wrong ways,” Lovullo remarked. “We concluded that improvements could be made. Specifically, Ketel could have been better, admittedly so.”

Despite the drama, Marte remains vital to the team. As the longest-tenured player since 2017, he boasts 1,215 hits and 189 homers. His positive standing in the clubhouse, coupled with a contract through 2030, contributes to his value.

“I love Ketel Marte — my relationship with him is not going to change,” Lovullo affirmed. Nonetheless, Marte’s actions have placed the franchise in a tough position. This isn’t his first unexplained absence. Last season, he missed three games after flying to the Dominican Republic when his home was burglarized.

Team’s Stance and Outlook

Teammates remain largely in the dark about Marte’s recent absence. Many rely on media reports to grasp the situation’s nuances.

Reliever Kevin Ginkel expressed disappointment but showed concern for Marte’s well-being. “There’s really no explanation for it,” Ginkel said. “But we’ve got 30-something games left, and hopefully we can get him back for a strong playoff push.”

Ginkel highlighted the team’s interest in Marte’s narrative. “I think it’d be nice to hear it, for sure,” he said. “Players are frustrated by how it happened. But his health, both physical and mental, comes first.”
