Lionel Messi played a key role for Argentina, scoring his 20th career World Cup goal and contributing to his team’s advancement.
“I have to give credit to our opponents,” said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. “Cape Verde proved they’re a great team.”
In the 111th minute, Argentina’s go-ahead goal came as an own-goal from Cape Verde’s Diney Borges after a header by Cristian Romero. Cape Verde’s Sidny Lopes Cabral and Deroy Duarte scored remarkable equalizers, stunning the Argentine supporters.

Messi continued to shine, scoring seven goals in this tournament. His quick touch and finish in the 29th minute gave Argentina an initial lead. Cape Verde’s determination was evident as they fought back, but ultimately, Argentina prevailed.

“We showed that we may be a small country,” Bubista said, “but we can play against some of the best teams in the world.”
