Ancient Marble Statue Unearthed in Sardis Reveals Lydian Heritage

An exceptionally rare marble statue dating back 2,500 years has been discovered in Sardis, an ancient city of significant historical import referenced in the Book of Revelation. The announcement from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism came earlier in August.

Sardis is situated in the Salihli district of Manisa, approximately 45 miles east of İzmir, Turkey. Archaeologists carefully unearthed the 7.2-foot tall statue, which still boasts remarkably preserved facial features, at the archaeological site.

Describing the statue, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted this find as an “extraordinary discovery,” noting that it was once used as paving along a colonnaded street during the Roman period. Positioned face-down, the statue’s location helped preserve its features over centuries.

The statue, depicting a young man holding a fruit, reflects elements of Lydian culture through unique clothing details. This artifact offers valuable insights into the life, religious beliefs, and cultural interactions in Sardis during its era.

Officials emphasized the statue’s “larger-than-life dimensions,” making it a rare example from its time. The young man wears a thick himation over a thin chiton and features a distinctive garment with horizontal lines, unlike other statues in Anatolia and Greece. These elements underscore its connection to Lydian culture.

Sardis was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom and later a vital center in the Persian Empire. It is mentioned in the Book of Revelation as one of seven churches in Asia Minor addressed by Jesus Christ.

Efforts to examine the statue for any remnants of painted pigments are underway. Experts will carefully remove the hardened deposits covering it while preserving any paint traces. The surrounding soil will also be studied for color evidence.

Once restoration is finished, the statue will be exhibited at the Manisa Museum in western Turkey. This discovery adds to a series of archaeological finds from ancient cities noted in the Book of Revelation, offering further context to these ancient narratives.
