Americans’ Views on the Economic System and Political Parties

Most Americans regard the free market system positively. Capitalism receives more favorable views than socialism overall. However, many Americans find the current economic landscape challenging, particularly in areas like home purchasing, family raising, and achieving financial security compared to the previous generation. Younger individuals tend to perceive fewer opportunities.

A significant portion of the population considers the current U.S. economic system unfair when it comes to advancement chances. This perception impacts political dynamics, notably in the Democratic primary discussions. Democratic supporters generally view socialism more positively than capitalism.

This is set against years of negative assessments of the U.S. economy, prompting many to reconsider traditional ideologies in search of solutions. The fairness of the economic system and perceived opportunities are key components of these views, with younger generations expressing more concern about their prospects.

Understanding Socialism

When asked about socialism, many people mention government control or ownership. Others associate socialism with ideals like equality, fairness, and assistance. Republicans and independents often reference government control, while Democrats frequently discuss equality, fairness, and public services.

Political Party Perspectives

Democrats generally hold a favorable view of socialism and perceive it as improving personal finances more than capitalism. Within the party, socialism is viewed more positively by Democrats with college degrees than those without. Younger Democrats and White Democrats tend to favor socialism as well.

The term “democratic socialist” is viewed positively by many Democrats, especially by younger and more liberal members. However, the “Democratic establishment” is usually perceived positively or neutrally within the party.

Progressiveness Within the Democratic Party

Democrats are divided on the party’s progressiveness. Around half believe the party matches their desired progressiveness, while others feel it falls short and seek more liberal directions.

These Democrats often feel the party does not align with their economic views “a lot.” They desire significant changes rather than incremental ones, emphasizing the importance of the party appearing to advocate effectively for their interests.

Public Perception of Political Parties

Both Democrats and Republicans aim to align more closely with public views on economic and cultural issues. While both parties find some agreement with voters, Democrats specifically face perceptions of weakness and ineffectiveness from a considerable portion of voters, including their own supporters.

Conversely, Republicans are primarily associated with a strong preference for capitalism, though there is some support for government price controls among them.

This CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted with 2,287 U.S. adults between August 12-14, 2026, has a margin of error of ±2.6 points. The sample reflects the U.S. demographic distribution based on recent census data and surveys.
