American Veteran Released from Russian Detention

Russia has released Robert Gilman, an American military veteran, after more than four years in prison under harsh conditions. Gilman, who was said to be gravely ill, is now en route to a U.S. military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological assessment. His family, including his mother who was in Russia, is traveling to be with him.

President Donald Trump announced that Gilman would arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Trump stated he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that Gilman’s release was on a humanitarian basis and without a prisoner exchange.

Gilman, originally handed a 3 1/2-year sentence in 2022 for allegedly assaulting a police officer, saw his term extended to 10 years after additional charges. The charges are disputed by his family, who credit Trump and U.S. Senator Ed Markey for his release.

“There is no other reason that Robert is alive today other than that President Trump heard about the case and took action,” said his sister, Lexie Hudson.

The State Department confirmed Gilman was released on humanitarian grounds and was not part of an exchange. His lawyer, Irina Brazhnikova, noted Gilman’s deteriorating health led to his hospitalization in a psychiatric ward where he was not allowed visitors.

Markey criticized Russia for Gilman’s condition, stating his release was overdue due to his life-threatening health issues caused by mistreatment in prison. He urged for cooperation between the U.S. and Russia to prevent similar situations.

Gilman was among eight Americans detained in Russia following several prisoner exchanges between the two countries. The Associated Press continues efforts to obtain comments from Russian officials.
