American Airlines announced it will suspend six North American routes due to increased jet fuel prices, linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Four routes originate from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), while two others are from Charlotte Douglas International in North Carolina. These changes are part of a broader response from airlines to volatile oil and fuel costs.
An American Airlines spokesperson stated that the airline’s jet fuel expenses are expected to rise by over $4 billion this year. The affected routes include flights from LAX to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles. Additionally, service from Charlotte to Ontario and Sacramento will be suspended. The suspension will be in effect from August 5 to October 5.
Passengers traveling on these routes will be offered alternate travel options or refunds as per airline policy. Despite the suspension, travelers from LAX to impacted cities can still fly on American Airlines, albeit with a connection.
The airline clarified that it is not permanently suspending any routes but is adjusting its capacity growth for 2026. A statement noted American Airlines will continue to provide a leading network with numerous flights across the U.S.
American Airlines follows other carriers like Norse Atlantic Airways, which also halted all LAX flights for the summer due to rising fuel prices.
