Jessica Bowie, a 35-year-old resident from Albany, faces serious charges from federal authorities. She is accused of pledging allegiance to ISIS and plotting a bomb attack on the New York State Capitol.
An FBI complaint reviewed on Thursday provides details about Bowie’s activities. It states that she converted to Islam approximately five years ago, assumed the name ‘Aisha Saif,’ and managed various social media accounts that endorsed extremist views. Her plans included conducting reconnaissance around the Capitol over several weeks.
Authorities indicate that Bowie discussed explosives, sought firearms, and identified lawmakers as potential targets. She was apprehended on August 19, facing charges of attempting to provide material support to a known terrorist organization.
Newsweek has reached out for comments from both the FBI and New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s office.
The criminal complaint released on Thursday mentions several social media accounts linked to Bowie. These accounts allegedly posted messages supporting terrorism between May and July. On May 28, one account reportedly praised the events of September 11th with the phrase “Praise be to Allah for September 11th.” Another message suggested intentions to “poison these infidels.”
In mid-July, an FBI source, pretending to be an ISIS operative, communicated with Bowie through encrypted messaging. Discussions about her plans to attack the Capitol building in Albany lasted two weeks.
Bowie reportedly conducted surveillance around the Capitol five times, sending numerous images to an FBI informant. On July 29, she allegedly expressed her desire to “destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators while they are meeting,” aiming to affect the “American system.”
According to the complaint, Bowie used $200 from an informant to purchase materials necessary to build an explosive device. Items bought at Home Depot on August 5 included nails, electrical tape, a 9-volt battery, and acetone.
Bowie, upon returning from the store, allegedly told FBI informants, “I hope the nails are big enough… because the nails work as shrapnel, right?”
This situation is still unfolding. More updates are expected as the investigation continues.
