Sen. Darline Graham and Rep. Ralph Norman Head to Runoff in GOP Senate Primary

Senator Darline Graham, appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to complete her late brother Lindsey Graham’s term, was pushed into a Republican Senate primary runoff by Representative Ralph Norman. This raises the possibility that GOP voters may not support a candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

In July, Trump endorsed Graham, encouraging her to run in a primary contest featuring ten GOP candidates, including Norman, Rep. Russell Fry, and former Governor Mark Sanford. The runoff winner on August 25 will face Democrat Annie Andrews, a doctor who secured her party’s nomination in June.

Graham is the first woman to represent South Carolina in the Senate. Despite this, her lack of elected office experience seemed to impact some voters, questioning Trump’s influence. Republican voter Bob Howell expressed this sentiment, indicating that Trump’s endorsement was not enough to secure his vote.

“I like President Trump, but I don’t think that that’s necessarily what sways my vote,” Howell said.

Earlier, Trump’s endorsed candidate for governor, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, faced a runoff against state Attorney General Alan Wilson. Trump issued dual endorsements, yet Wilson won. This reflects a pattern where Trump-backed candidates have not always triumphed in Republican nominations nationwide. The winning candidate of this Republican runoff is favored in November since a Democrat last won a Senate seat there in 1998.

After Lindsey Graham’s death on July 11, Darline Graham stepped in as his Senate replacement. Trump quickly backed her through his Truth Social platform, emphasizing strong support. In the Senate, Graham has focused on passing a bill imposing sanctions on Russia and Iran, furthering her brother’s efforts. This legislation passed with resounding support.

Graham stated her achievements in her brief Senate tenure, citing her work on the sanctions bill and supporting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s confirmation. She emphasizes earning votes, acknowledging the importance of actively campaigning to maintain the seat.

Ralph Norman, who supports Trump’s congressional agenda, now opposes Graham with the backing of most Republican voters previously against her. She must unify support quickly to retain a seat held by her family since 2003.
