Alaska Senate Race Sees Three Dan Sullivans

The Alaska Senate race has taken an interesting turn with the presence of three candidates named Dan Sullivan. Incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, a member of the Republican party, is running against Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher, and Democratic former Rep. Mary Peltola. Adding to the mix, former Anchorage mayor Dan A. Sullivan has publicly endorsed Sen. Dan S. Sullivan for re-election.

On Tuesday, Dan A. Sullivan expressed his support for the senator through a Facebook post, encouraging voters to back him. He stated, “As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska.”

Both Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and Mary Peltola advanced to the general election following the recent all-party primary. The race uses a ranked-choice voting system, allowing the top four finishers to progress irrespective of their political parties. While the identities of the other two candidates remain unconfirmed, Dan J. Sullivan is potentially one of them.

The Alaska Senate race is seen as highly competitive, with outcomes pivotal to the control of the upper chamber. As votes continue to be counted, Peltola currently leads with 48%, followed by Sen. Dan S. Sullivan with 43%. Dan J. Sullivan, also running as a Republican, holds 2.4%, with others trailing behind.

Democrats view this election as a possible opportunity to gain a Senate seat. The Cook Political Report has labeled the race a tossup.

Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy has encountered legal challenges. There are allegations from Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and fellow Republicans suggesting that Dan J. Sullivan was included on the ballot to create voter confusion and reduce the senator’s votes. They also contend that he is collaborating with Peltola.

Both Dan J. Sullivan and Peltola have denied any coordination. Despite initial disqualification by the state Division of Elections, the Alaska Supreme Court recently allowed Dan J. Sullivan to remain on the ballot. State and federal prosecutors in Alaska are examining whether this situation is part of an alleged voter confusion conspiracy. This investigation has led to subpoenas for witnesses associated with Dan J. Sullivan’s campaign.
